  • The company received the distinction among 25 projects representing 10 Latin American countries.

Andes Solar IIB, one of AES Andes' hybrid renewable generation parks, won first place in the Energy Excellence Award from the Latin American Energy Organization (OLADE) in the renewable energies category.

The award ceremony took place yesterday during the IX version of the Energy Week organized by OLADE, which this time was held in Asunción, Paraguay.

The award was presented by Javier Giménez, Minister of Industry and Commerce of Paraguay, and Alexandra Planas, Senior Energy Efficiency Specialist at the IDB, to the Vice President of Corporate Affairs and Sustainability at AES Andes, Mariana Soto, and the Director of Corporate Finance and Investor Relations of the company, Juan Luis Carrasco.

Andes Solar IIB combines a photovoltaic park with one of the largest battery banks in Latin America. It is located in the heart of the Atacama Desert, in the Antofagasta region, almost 300 km from the regional capital, and began operations with the authorization of the National Electric Coordinator (CEN) in July 2023.

The solar park has a capacity of 180 MW photovoltaic and also has 112 MW of batteries for 5 hours, making it one of the largest storage systems in Latin America.

The Vice President of Corporate Affairs and Sustainability at AES Andes, Mariana Soto, while thanking for the award, stated that “we are very honored to receive this important award which constitutes a strong endorsement of the entire transformational strategy that AES Andes is carrying out, which focuses on the development of renewable energies and battery energy storage systems.”

Soto added that “Andes Solar IIB is a concrete example of the commitment to the energy transition we are experiencing in the country, but also to the surrounding communities. When we started its construction, one of our objectives was to generate local jobs, but especially to train women to integrate them into these tasks for two basic principles: for the social mobility that means that a head of household can access a paid job, but also to make them participants in the energy transition we are experiencing in Chile.”

Andes Solar IIB won first place among 25 participants representing 10 Latin American countries.

The Energy Excellence Award aims to publicly recognize the efforts of institutions, organizations, communities, and companies from OLADE member countries for their achievements in the rational use and defense of energy resources.
